Mello, Carolina Santos
The neonatal period is recognized as a high vulnerability to morbidity and mortality. Inadequate prenatal care and maternal and childbirth complications increase the risk of hospitalization of the newborn, often with longer hospitalization times, requiring complex care. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors associated with longer hospitalization times of newborns in intensive and intermediate care units in maternity hospitals in the city of Salvador, Bahia. Secondary data from the QualiNeo database of the Ministry of Health were analyzed, of newborns admitted to neonatal care units of two maternity hospitals in Salvador, from 2021 to 2022. Sociodemographic, obstetric, and neonatal data were evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed with Jamovi software, using the Mann-Whitney test and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the association between clinical and nutritional factors and length of hospitalization. A total of 763 newborns were included. Factors such as alcohol consumption, arterial hypertension, premature rupture of membranes, multiple gestation, use of antenatal steroids and magnesium sulfate were related to longer hospital stays. Neonatal characteristics such as weight, head circumference and gestational age were negatively correlated with length of hospital stay. The use of parenteral nutrition was associated with longer hospital stays, as was the use of infant formula in the discharge diet.
