O diabo no claustro: freiras pactuantes na Inquisição de Lisboa (séculos XVII-XVIII)

Abstract

Entre os séculos XVII e XVIII, a Inquisição de Lisboa inquiriu seis religiosas de ordens regulares por práticas heréticas que as enquadravam no crime de feitiçaria. Diferente da grande maioria dos processos abertos contra portuguesas leigas pelo mesmo delito, esses casos se iniciaram após as freiras terem confessado, voluntariamente, que realizaram pactos com o demônio, adoraram-no, mantiveram relações sexuais com ele, dentre outros atos abominados pela Igreja. Tendo em vista os estudos da História Social e Cultural que se preocuparam em identificar os sentidos da feitiçaria para os doutos e população não letrada, o nosso objetivo é analisar tais casos procurando compreender o que essas relações com o diabólico significaram para as Esposas de Cristo. Dessa forma, primeiro nos preocuparemos em verificar a origem social das rés, por que e como ingressaram nas ordens religiosas e como poderiam viver em seus conventos. Em seguida, buscaremos captar que tipo de comportamento as levaram a cair nas malhas do Santo Ofício e sob quais meios elas se apresentaram diante dos inquisidores. Por fim, analisaremos tais práticas com o demoníaco no contexto da religiosidade portuguesa da época, para entendermos o que poderia ter significado para essas mulheres seu suposto envolvimento com o diabólico. Com a nossa pesquisa, esperamos contribuir para um entendimento mais diversificado a respeito da vida conventual e agência feminina diante das condições impostas às mulheres no período moderno.

Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Inquisition of Lisbon inquired six sisters of the regular clergy due to their heretical practices that framed them in the crime of witchcraft. Unlike the vast majority of cases opened against portuguese lay women for the same offense, these cases began after the nuns voluntarily confessed that they made pacts with the devil, worshiped him, had sexual relations with him, among other acts abhorred by the Church. In view of the studies of Social and Cultural History that have been concerned with identifying the meaning of witchcraft for the savant and illiterate population, our purpose is to analyze such cases to understand what these relations with the diabolical meant to the Wives of Christ. In this sense, first we will to be concerned with verifying the social origin of the culprit, why and how they entered religious orders, and how they could live in their convents. Then, we will try to capture what kind of behavior led the Inquisition to caught up them and under what means they betake themselves. Finally, we will analyze such practices with the demonic in the context of portuguese religiosity of the period, to understand what might have meant to these women their supposed involvement with the devil. With our research, we hope to contribute to a more diversified understanding of convent life and women's agency in the face of the conditions imposed on women in the modern period.
