Abstract: The objective was to describe and characterize morphological changes observed in cervical spine computed tomography (CT) scans of patients with sickle cell disease treated at a tertiary care center in Bahia, Brazil. This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted at Professor Edgard Santos University Hospital. Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of sickle cell disease, aged between 14 and 60 years, who underwent cervical spine CT scans between June 2024 and March 2025, were included. Morphological changes suggestive of sickle cell disease-related bone involvement, as well as degenerative alterations, were systematically assessed and recorded. A total of 27 patients were included. The mean age was 33.4 ± 13.4 years, and 59% were female. The most frequent sickle cell disease-related findings were H-shaped vertebrae (26%; 95% CI: 13.2%–44.7%), bone density alterations including heterogeneity and sclerosis (22%; 95% CI: 10.6%–40.8%), and loss of cervical lordosis (26%; 95% CI: 13.2%–44.7%). Degenerative changes were also prevalent, with cervical spondylosis identified in 33% (95% CI: 18.6%–51.0%) and intervertebral disc degeneration in 30% (95% CI: 16.2%–47.9%) of the patients. Additionally, 22% (95% CI: 10.6%–40.8%) had no pathological findings on CT. Cervical spine CT scans in patients with sickle cell disease frequently demonstrate both disease-related bone abnormalities and degenerative changes. These findings underscore the importance of systematic cervical spine evaluation in this population and highlight the need for further studies with larger samples and control groups.

      <title>Estado nutricional de iodo, selênio e função tireoidiana em idosos da Universidade Aberta à Terceira Idade</title>

Abstract: Introduction – Iodine and selenium are essential micronutrients involved in thyroid metabolism. Iodine is used in the synthesis of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, and selenium acts as part of the enzyme iodothyronine 5'-deiodinase type I, thioredoxin reductase and selenoproteins. Objective – This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of iodine and selenium, through mean urinary concentration and thyroid function, in elderly people enrolled at the Open University of the Third Age (UATI). Methods – This is an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study, carried out in Salvador (Bahia), in 2019. In this study, urinary iodine and selenium were measured using the ICP-MS analysis method, and thyroid hormones through blood samples measured using the chemiluminescence technique. Results – 118 elderly people participated in the study, with the highest prevalence of women (91.5%), and the median age was 70 years (IQR: 66-73). The nutritional status was adequate according to BMI: 25.2 kg/m² (IQR: 22.3- 29.5), with a prevalence of 53.4% (n=63), but with low values 62.7% (n=74) of calf circumference, characteristic of malnutrition in the elderly. The mean values for iodine (257.5; SD: 150.1), selenium (35.1; SD: 38.1), T3L (2.754; SD: 0.3640) and TSH (2,352; SD: 1,267) were found. Among volunteers with iodine deficiency, selenium levels were lower (median: 10.7; IQR: 5.2-15.3). In those with adequate selenium levels, the values demonstrated excess iodine (median: 400; IQR: 270-549), both being statistically significant (p value &lt; 0.0001). Conclusion – The iodine levels found in the sample demonstrated an excess of the mineral, with values above recommendations, demonstrating a risk for toxicity. Regarding selenium dosage, low levels were found in the studied population. Altered iodine and selenium nutritional status and normal thyroid function were observed. Monitoring iodine and selenium in the elderly is a necessary measure to define the effectiveness of programs to prevent nutritional and health disorders in the population.

Abstract: Introduction - Treatment of the burned patient at the appropriate time prevents&#xD;
the occurrence of sequelae. The use of collagen-based skin substitutes can&#xD;
promote a sterile wound and serve as a framework for the healing process to&#xD;
occur. Objective - To evaluate tissue repair after the application of&#xD;
decellularized bovine pericardium biomaterial for the treatment of cutaneous&#xD;
burns. Methodology - This was an intervention study on experimental research&#xD;
with 48 rats, divided into two groups; with the experimental group being&#xD;
submitted to thermal burn on the back of the animals, by the brass plate&#xD;
method. After being burned, the experimental group received treatment with&#xD;
decellularized bovine pericardium biomaterial. The other group received&#xD;
treatment with rayon dressing soaked with petrolatum. The animals were&#xD;
sacrificed and evaluated histomorphologically at the biological time intervals of&#xD;
7, 15, 28 and 60 postoperative days. Results - There was formation of&#xD;
granulation tissue with collagen fibers positioned in a more parallel manner and&#xD;
with less leukocyte fibrin exudate in the initial period of treatment in the&#xD;
experimental group. Maintenance of the biomaterial covering of the burned&#xD;
tissue was observed in up to 28 days. At the end of the 60 days, the control&#xD;
group presented a higher mean cicatricial contraction value when compared&#xD;
with that of the experimental group. Conclusion: The biomaterial was&#xD;
biocompatible, promoted the stability of the lesion and increased repair of the&#xD;
cutaneous lesion caused by the burn.

Abstract: Strongyloidiasis is a neglected parasitic disease which prevalence might&#xD;
be underestimated in many countries, it has a particular importance among&#xD;
immunosuppressed patients due to the risk of hyperinfection, which might be fatal.&#xD;
Early diagnosis is essential to prevent the serious forms of the disease, but the&#xD;
methods used nowadays involve looking larvae in the feces, technique which only&#xD;
raises its sensitivity through repetitions using fecal samples collected on alternate&#xD;
days. Immunological methods, especially the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay&#xD;
(ELISA), are practical and able to test several samples at once, but still lack of&#xD;
standardization with an antigen easy to obtain and reproduct. The aim of this study is&#xD;
to evaluate the efficiency of the crude antigen extracts of S. stercoralis and S.&#xD;
venezuelensis and their fractions higher and lower than 100 kDa for the&#xD;
immunodiagnosis of human strongyloidiasis, and to identify their immunodominant&#xD;
molecules through Western Blotting technique. Serum samples obtained from&#xD;
patients with strongyloidiasis, or other helminthiasis, and healthy adults were&#xD;
analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The crude antigenic&#xD;
extract of S. stercoralis and fractions with molecular weight higher and lower than&#xD;
100 kDa showed 90%, 90% and 84% sensitivity, and 95%, 98% and 95% specificity,&#xD;
respectively. The crude antigenic extract of S. venezuelensis and fractions with&#xD;
molecular weight higher and lower than 100 kDa showed 76%, 82% and 75%&#xD;
sensitivity, and 43%, 93% and 64% specificity, respectively. The results reached&#xD;
suggest that the fraction higher than 100 kDa concentrates immunodiminant&#xD;
molecules and its presentation as lower than 100 kDa on Western Blotting suggests&#xD;
that they’re organized in protein complexes dismantled by the desnaturation process&#xD;
realized before the eletroforesis
