Abstract: Geographers have recognized that trade fairs and other temporary spaces function as centers of knowledge, but we have a weak understanding of how fairs are themed spaces, similar to parades, festivals, and built environments, that produce cultural and political meanings. In this article we analyze the morphology, iconography, and performance of a large agricultural fair in Brazil, the Bahia Farm Show, which produces a regional identity of highly productive, leading-edge, and globally competitive agriculture in a former economic backwater. We discuss the production of themes in terms of power relations, cultural processes, relations with nature, and sociotechnological norms for agriculture. Omissions from the Farm Show indicate tension and accommodation between elites at different geographical scales. Brazil's high-input, high-output agriculture relies in part on the meanings that events such as agricultural fairs sustain and reproduce.

Abstract: Coatis are omnivores whose diet consists of small vertebrates, invertebrates, and fruit. In urban areas, they may ingest food waste that has been discarded in deposits near their habitat, or they may consume food offered by humans. The present work investigates the diet of coatis through analysis of 56 fecal samples collected from Morro Imperador, a fragment of woodland inserted into an urban center in the municipality of Juiz de Fora, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The results point to a diet with niche breadth of 0.4 in which the percentage of occurrence of insects (34.9 %) and fruit (19.9 %) comprise the main dietary items. The presence of food due to human action (direct or indirect) is also constant throughout the year (14.1 %), thereby demonstrating the ability of these animals to adapt to modified environments.

Abstract: 1] The passive flux meter (PFM) measures local cumulative water and contaminant fluxes at an observation well. Conditional stochastic simulation accounting for both spatial correlation and data skewness is introduced to interpret passive flux meter observations in terms of probability distributions of discharges across control planes (transects) of wells. An estimator of the effective number of independent data is defined and applied in the development of two significantly simpler approximate methods for estimating discharge distributions. One method uses a transformation of the t statistic to account for data skewness and the other method is closely related to the classic bootstrap. The approaches are demonstrated with passive flux meter data from two field sites (a trichloroethylene [TCE] plume at Ft. Lewis, WA, and a uranium plume at Rifle, CO). All methods require that the flux heterogeneity is sufficiently represented by the data and maximum differences in discharge quantile estimates between methods are ∼7%.

Abstract: The preparation of cellulose acetate-poly-(9,9-bis(6′-N,N,N trimethylammonium)-hexyl-fluorene phenylene) bromide (HTMA-PFP) blend films by solvent casting from a dispersion is reported. Films were characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy, SEM, electrical conductivity, TGA and DSC. It was found that morphological and physical chemical properties of blends were dependent both on the solvent and the degree of polymerization of cellulose acetate. The fluorescence properties of different blends were evaluated by fluorescence microscopy and it was shown that they are dependent on the structural properties of the blend as well as the aggregation level of the polyfluorene. Release kinetics of HTMA-PFP, incorporated into blend films, in SDS aqueous solutions have been studied and are discussed on the basis of the Korsmeyer–Peppas equation.
