Abstract: This thesis deals with the ethnographic circumscription of fundamental elements of the indigenous existence of the indigenous community Anacé da serra da Japuara, in order to demonstrate the historical continuity in the territory of the municipality of Caucaia, in Ceará, from the 17th century to the 21st century. Therefore, it analyzes the relevant historiography, academic works of indigenous Anacé and the ethnographic material prepared between the years 2019 and 2022. The latter, in turn, had as propulsion the Ingoldian idea of "mesh" to write the experiences lived by the Anacé da Japuara with the environment of the Serra da Japuara and surroundings, in which there are senses imprinted on the ground of the villages and inside the land. In this way, we emphasize kinship connections as linked to places, which can also be seen in the documentary corpus, in the bibliography of the theme, as well as in the local narrative about families and places. This bond is what we pursue throughout the course of fieldwork. From the moment that the reality lived by this indigenous community revealed the coexistence with the extra environmental, we use the notion of "cosmopolitics" of Isabelle Stenger (2018) for analytical purpose. Thus, we circumscribe the notion of cosmopolitical meshes from the demonstration that kinship connections sustain the indigenous existence of this Anacé community in the environment in which it maintains a longevous bond, Especially in the extra environmental dimension of coexistence with enchanted independently of the change of land regime.

Abstract: This ethnography describes and analyzes relationships between masculinities, urban space, bodies, and morality among young and adult men, residents of a popular neighborhood in the city of Salvador da Bahia (Brazil). The so-called “brothers” regularly gather in a public space to practice “workout” – muscular hypertrophy with the use of improvised and self-made equipments – and “calisthenics” or “street training” – urban exercises based on the recreation of gymnastics movements from olympic training, fitness training, breakdance, and le parkour. Public spaces for physical training become conducive to the emergence of almost exclusively male and heterosexual sociability bonds, hosting modes of socialization through which men learn and incorporate sports techniques to transform their body appearance. Issues of gender, sexuality, social class, and race emerge. The understanding of how bodies are imagined, manufactured, and sexualized in these training spaces are analyzed and described. Based on extensive field work, interviews, the use of photographs and the researcher's practical engagement in bodily activities, this ethnography shows: 1) the demarcation of physical and symbolic boundaries of a training space that is transformed into a territory of intergenerational male sociability; 2) the emphasis given, by the regulars themselves, to young people who transform “workout” and/or “street training” into a lifestyle; 3) transformations in body aesthetics and the creation of bonds with other men (a training brotherhood), as part of adherence to a lifestyle called “fitness”; 4) the emergence of moral conceptions marked by the routine of focused training, dietary discipline, and notions of personal success, social distinction, and prestige; 5) the subject's agency in search of a physical and subjective response to the effects of territorial stigma, violence, racism, and the absence of formal work, which characterize many urban peripheries in Brazil. At the crossroads of these questions, there is the learning of technical skills and a common language regarding forms of “manufacturing” a virile and strong body, incorporated through exercises, but also conversation, observation, physical contact, and the communion with values that – outside the group – could easily be condemned as misogynistic and homophobic.

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to contribute to the study of the samba dance style and music genre
in the Greater Salvador area. It starts from the perception that, after a certain "invisibility"
experienced with the rise of axé music in the 1980s, urban samba with an Afro-Bahian tradition
has reappeared in Salvador in the last two decades in various events, which constitute in new
spaces of socialization and leisure that recreate and maintain the traditional ways of making
samba in the city. These ways of making samba are inserted in the current scenario of market
production and media dissemination of the music produced in Bahia, as well as in the context
of spectacularization that marks the culture in contemporary societies. In an attempt to map its
extent and to build a panoramic view of these practices, this research was developed as an
ethnography of the samba in the Greater Salvador area, including some events of different types
and dimensions, highlighting especially a few major events like the Caminhada do Samba
parade, held every year since 2005 during the carnival festivity, the celebrations of the Black
Awareness month (in November) and the Samba Day in early December. The study concludes
that the resumption of samba in Salvador demonstrates that samba integrates the way of life of
the black and mestizo population of the city, as a musical and symbolic basis of their cultural
practices, especially to face the segregationist clashes that, historically, marked these practices
and guarantee the preservation of samba through constant renewal, influenced by the city’s
cultural context.

Abstract: The following research was dedicated to investigating and understanding the experience of the sacred in men who embody the Pombagira entity in the city of Salvador – BA. Based on the interpretation of the narratives of these subjects, as well as, through observation and experience in rituals and daily events related to this entity. The research was initially designed to be developed in an Umbanda Center, but it was not limited to this space, extending to the domestic environment of the mediums' house and reaching new experiences based on the revealed world of the rich narratives. This problem arose from the questioning of the collective imagination and classical literature that deals with the presence of male mediums in Afro-religious rituals and announces the discourse that this category designates a model of deviant masculinity. While attributing to Pombagira the representation of the social contravening woman, often linked to the universe of the streets, feminine power and prostitution. Underwritten in a heteronormative context, this combination of factors causes these subjects to occupy a position of border and ambiguity, “escaping the planned path” (LourO, 2004) and materializing with their religious/sacred practices unconventional ways of producing other genres and other sexual identities.
