Título: As tintas e cores do imaginário : a abordagem de Gilberto Freyre do imaginário da casa
Autor(es): Paz, Daniel Juracy Mellado
Abstract: The paper presents the approach of writer and social scientist Gilberto Freyre (1900-1987) on the imaginary around the house, a central theme in his work. The imaginary, an essential dimension of human existence, in Freyre's work is studied from three instances. The first concerns the resources used to protect the home and family: prophylaxis, rituals, the role of fauna and flora, talismans and magical resources, as well as the saints. The other instance is that of the family extended to shelter invisible relatives, such
as saints and the dead, and the presence of ghosts. Finally, what we call fantastic ecology, which involves the meanings given to flora and fauna, the omens they brought and those supernatural creatures from nightmares.

Abstract: In the view of the writer, intellectual and social scientist Gilberto Freyre (1900-1987) the house it is always full: of people, animals, things, of visible and invisible bodies. Everything was multiplied by meanings, by layers of feeling, values, and even mystical correspondence between things. We present in this paper part of the layers of reality that Freyre tried to interpret around the house, constituting a particular investigation matrix. Our focus is on the symbolic and fantastic that surrounds the house, based on its tangible support, the things and the animals. The world that Gilberto Freyre sees is full of people, animals, things and evocations, where the present is crossed by the past, real or imaginary, in a dense and tangled web. The Freyrean interpretative method ends up being a sociological modality of the doctrine of correspondences, where a kind of portolan of the imaginary can be outlined, with still fruitful application.

De vales e valas: a Rua da Valla na Salvador do Séc. XIX

Título: De vales e valas: a Rua da Valla na Salvador do Séc. XIX
Autor(es): Paz, Daniel Juracy Mellado
Abstract: This paper argues for the importance of the Rio das Tripas and Camurugipe river to the constitution of the city of Salvador - BA. First as defense element of early settlement, and then transformed into technical device of circulation and sewage, structural to the city at the time of it extrapolation beyond its original core. The paper emphasizes its urbanization in the XIX century, as the Rua da Valla, connecting consolidated areas of the city, exploring a valley previously problematic and, on a larger scale, to launch the most distant suburbs, the north and south ends. The Rua da Valla was built at the same time that other urban infrastructure initiatives are being carried out, mechanizing the metropolis and broadening the scale of understanding and action. The Rua da Valla operate in all the drainage of the heart of the city and will be, for many decades, the main trunk of the various city sanitation projects, as well as key piece to some of its main avenues. This dual role, sewage and urban connection will occur mixed with the drinking water supply from the first dams, aqueducts and fountains, also using the springs of the basin, and the city's meat supply, and even something of their funeral activities. Although geometrically central today, in the history of Salvador this valley always appeared sometimes as a kind of "background", before peripheral, now on the lower floors, besides its huge importance.

O olho peripatético: a mecânica da visão dos viajantes oitocentistas em terras brasileiras

Título: O olho peripatético: a mecânica da visão dos viajantes oitocentistas em terras brasileiras

Abstract: The role of the contemplation of landscapes, opening of visuals and situation in positions of command of the surroundings is important for the understanding and design of the Architecture. In order to reconstitute the historiography of this scopic concern, the consultation of the literature of eighteenth-century travelers in Brazil revealed a mechanics radically different from the current mode of landscape enjoyment. It had an articulation with other forms of eye education, corresponding and convergent, in an intricate interweaving, such as painting, literature, gardening and botany. In the mobilized synesthetic spectrum, the most important and complex of the senses is the vision. The look is far from static. In its most complex feature, it has motor components on at least three scales: the body, the head and the eyes. At the body scale, with paths and its apices, with long periods unworthy of note, and apogees, generally in elevated places, where a dazzling panorama was seen. These moments were the compensation of strenuous journeys, and even their goal. The pleasure of contemplation was related to the necessary displacement, intentional or accidental, to the belvedere. Similarly, the circumstances of transport, in particular by boat. At the head scale, with the panoramic glance of the eye. At the eye scale, scanning the scene, walking through the details, reproducing the logic of the admiration of a painting. It was the empire of variety and richness - at all levels, like paths or the elements in the landscape. Another important aspect in the journey was the alternation of the panoramic with the microscopic, of the great landscapes to the small animals. If it was not the real mechanics of gaze, at least it was the conscious, the expected and codified, related to the cultured habits of that time, which even had its philosophical premises explicit, of an eye that needed to be satiated with continuous impressions. It was a motor architecture of the sensibility that was broken by several reasons and rearticulated in other patterns and sets, with some remains throughout the XXth century.
