Abstract: This research investigates how the City of Music of Bahia constitutes itself as a cultural
facility and builds its legitimacy in the museum field in Salvador. It is based on the
hypothesis that the space develops a twofold discursive strategy, presenting itself
institutionally as a cultural facility, but publicly projecting an image of a museum by means
of formal records, journalistic articles, and curatorial representations. Its general objective is
to analyze the processes of promoting and perceiving the City of Music of Bahia as a
museum, by investigating the construction of its meanings and symbolic legitimacies. Its
specific objectives are to comprehend how institutional and media communication
contributes to the construction of the imaginary about cultural facilities; to explore the
conceptual and professional boundaries between cultural facilities and museums, based on the
notion of cultural hybridism; and to analyze how the institutional structure and the
participation of museology professionals influence the symbolic legitimation of the facility.
The research adopts a qualitative, exploratory methodology, using study cases as the central
approach, complemented by literature review and document analysis, including journalistic
and digital analysis, institutional records, and direct observation of the space. The results
indicate that the City of Music of Bahia is a hybrid cultural institution, whose strategy of
discursive ambiguity enables the legitimization of the museum, but hides substantive
weaknesses in the implementation of fundamental museological practices, such as the
absence of a museological project and professionals from Museology. It is concluded that the
space exemplifies the transformations of the contemporary cultural field, where hybrid
institutions challenge traditional parameters, unveiling tensions between innovation and
commitment to protocols in the Museology area.

Abstract: This study investigates the intersections between memory, photography, and museology,
focusing on interactions with photopaintings and photographs in the Acervo da Laje, a
neighborhood in the Subúrbio Ferroviário of Salvador, Brazil. Drawing on concepts such as
afrografias and critical fabulation, it examines how family photographs and artistic practices
engage with the preservation of peripheral memories and identities. Leda Martins’ concept of
afrografias reveals photographic images that reflect Black identity and the processes of
appropriation and reinterpretation of memory within the African diaspora, while critical
fabulation, inspired by Saidiya Hartman, offers a reading of how invisible histories can be
reimagined, challenging dominant narratives and highlighting silenced stories. The research
adopts a qualitative methodology, including literature review, a case study with
autobiographical approach and testimonials, as well as an analysis of the photopainting
collection from the Acervo da Laje. Initially, the study explores the transformations of the
photopaintings as revealed by Mestre Júlio Santos, and how these images integrate individual
and collective memories. Next, it discusses the body as a crossroads of memories and the
power of photopaintings as afrografias, analyzing narrative practices that build Black
identities based on experiences in the Subúrbio Ferroviário and the Acervo da Laje. Finally, it
presents the role of affective curatorships in valuing invisible histories, exemplified by the
exhibition “Memórias para Dona Antônia,” where artistic reinterpretations of family photos
re-signify affective and community ties. This research highlights the importance of
Afrocentric museological practices that recognize peripheries as legitimate spaces of cultural
production and memory, promoting the protagonism of historically marginalized people.

Abstract: This research analyzes the representations of Maria Quitéria, Maria Felipa, and Joana Angélica
on the medal Women and Independence – Heroines of Freedom, commemorating the
Bicentennial of the Independence of Bahia. It seeks to identify how the object of study is
represented and reflected in the materiality of the piece and the historical facts that support it.
The representation of women can echo what a group wishes to communicate to the public about
a particular person or event—often favoring figures of power deemed important by a select
group. As a result, their faces have appeared on various commemorative medals, most of which
depict more men than women. In this context, the study proposes to identify the representations
of Joana Angélica, Maria Felipa, and Maria Quitéria, historically contextualizing the creation
of the medal within the scope of the commemorations, and analyzing how it contributes to the
construction of conceptions about these three women. A qualitative methodology was chosen,
through theoretical review based on the reading of books and articles on Numismatics,
iconography, and the personalities involved, highlighting women and how they were
represented through symbols and expressions; and documentary research through catalogs,
websites, articles, and podcasts, as well as an iconographic analysis built upon the aspects
presented on the medal. The representations align with how the historical facts were
contextualized, revealing coinages where men are often more prominently depicted than
women, although other themes may prevail. The research traverses the concepts and branches
of Numismatics, collecting practices, and proceeds to the records of women within these fields,
along with the histories tied to the three figures that contributed to shaping their representations.
