Abstract: This paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of cooperation in productive ventures, conceived of as collective action endeavours that require cooperation rather than mere coordination. It is argued that cooperative behaviour is grounded on three kinds of ‘common goods’, defined as goods that are shared and recognized as beneficial by the workers. These comprise common goals, relational satisfaction, and moral norms and values. The commonly held goods are associated with motives and behavioural rules which constitute both the reasons for cooperating and the means through which the dilemmatic nature
of cooperation is overcome. It is further argued that the binding character of these rules is closely linked to humans’ ability and opportunity to communicate. Normative guidelines relative to management practices and directions for future research are also derived.

Abstract: Portugal, a semi-peripheral country within the world economy, has followed similar and distinct financialisation processes to those of core countries. This article reflects on the factors that have shaped social reproduction in Portugal by examining the differentiated ways through which finance has interacted with the provision of housing, pensions and water and their variegated impacts. Based on these three case studies, the article discusses the constraints on, and pressures for, continued expansion of finance in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis. It underlines the subordinated and uneven nature of Portuguese semi-peripheral financialisation, the role of European integration in its unfolding, and concludes that the promotion of the interests of finance located in major advanced capitalist countries, and of the national and international institutions under their influence, has resulted in growing social and spatial inequalities.

Abstract: The indebtedness of Spain, Portugal and Greece has grown in recent years primarily because of the private sector. Unable to compete successfully within the Eurozone, the private sector of peripheral countries has accumulated domestic and foreign debt. Aggregate debt – both public and private - poses severe problems for the banks of core countries, which also face liquidity problems because of funding dollar assets with euro liabilities. The policies adopted by the EU aim at rescuing banks, while facilitating the borrowing of peripheral states. However, a simple analysis of aggregate demand shows that the ensuing austerity is likely to lead to recession. In this light, the paper discusses the option of default and exit from the Eurozone for peripheral countries. This strategy offers the prospect of stronger and more equitable growth, but only if it takes place at the initiative of the borrower. It must also be accompanied by a programme of reforms that reverses the neoliberal thrust of current policy.

Abstract: This article offers a critical literature review on household consumption and credit, seeking to identify the main contributions and disadvantages of disciplinary approaches to understanding the multiple factors influencing these important socioeconomic behaviors. Based on this literature review, an interdisciplinary line of research is proposed within the framework of political economy, giving special relevance to structural factors, such as recent transformations in contemporary capitalism that have resulted in an extraordinary growth in the weight of the economic and political power of finance, and highlighting relevant social changes, such as the increasing preponderance of neoliberal ideology, which promotes an individualization of the provision of goods and services favorable to the financial sector.
