Ouvindo Bach em outras línguas: uma análise descritivo-comparativa de traduções das cantatas

Abstract

Esta pesquisa é uma análise descritivo-comparativa de traduções, para as línguas portuguesa e inglesa, dos textos de duas cantatas compostas por Johann Sebastian Bach, a serem executadas musicalmente. Foram investigadas algumas questões, como o estilo literário a ser utilizado, a adequação da letra à partitura musical e as características do público alvo. Estes fatores foram levados em conta na análise das traduções, que se baseou nos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução desenvolvidos por Gideon Toury a partir da Teoria dos Polissistemas, elaborada por Itamar Even-Zohar. Tal teoria mostra a interferência dos vários sistemas que interagem entre si, determinando a compleição de uma obra. A descrição-comparação visa explicar a “adaptação” do texto à cultura alvo. Como hipótese do trabalho, assumimos que deveria haver dois sistemas de normas que regeram a tradução das cantatas. Isto quer dizer que, apesar de existirem normas universais para a tradução de textos para serem cantados, normas estas ditadas pelo sistema de notação musical e de possibilidade vocal, assumimos que as traduções sofreriam mudanças também devido às diferentes tradições musicais das culturas receptoras (a tradição britânica e a brasileira). O objetivo foi observar a existência de estratégias que se diferenciariam pelas questões lingüístico-culturais e as que se aproximariam devido ao contexto comum: a música. O corpus de análise é composto pelas traduções de duas Cantatas de Bach, por três tradutores ingleses e um brasileiro. Foram selecionados os segmentos mais significativos, identificadas as estratégias tradutórias mais freqüentes e feita uma análise à luz do sistema de normas das culturas receptoras, ao mesmo tempo em que foi realizada a comparação entre as estratégias. O estudo pôde confirmar a hipótese, uma vez que a descrição-comparação demonstrou que as normas musicais aproximam as estratégias tradutórias, enquanto estas se diferenciam devido às diferenças culturais dos pólos receptores.

This research is a descriptive-comparative analysis of translations, into the English and Portuguese languages, of two cantatas composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. These translations were produced to be musically performed. Some questions were investigated, such as the literary style to be used, the adequacy of the lyrics related to the score, and finally the target public characteristics. These factors were observed in the translation analysis, which was based on the Descriptive Translation Studies developed by Gideon Toury, from the Polysystem Theory elaborated by Itamar Even-Zohar. This theory shows the influence of the multiple systems that interact among themselves, determining the features of a translation. The descriptive-comparison aims at explaining the adaptation of the translated work to the target culture. As the hypothesis of this study, it was assumed that there would be two systems of norms regulating the translation of the cantatas. This is to say that, despite universal norms that would exist due to the translation of texts created to be sung, and dictated by the written musical system and by the vocal possibility, translations would also suffer the influence of norms related to the different cultural traditions of the receiving poles (the Anglo-American and the Brazilian cultures). The objective was to observe the existence of strategies that would differ as a consequence of linguistic-cultural aspects and the ones that would be similar due to the common context: the music. The corpus of the analysis consisted of the translations of two Cantatas of Bach, by one Brazilian and three British translators. The most significant elements were identified, the most frequent translation strategies were selected, and their analysis was made in the light of the normative system of the receiving cultures, along with a comparison among these strategies. The study could confirm the hypothesis, once the description-comparison demonstrated that the musical system approximates translation strategies, whereas they differ according to cultural differences of the receiving poles.
