Abreviaturas: uso e função nos manuscritos

Abstract

O estudo das abreviaturas é um tema bastante relevante, uma vez que esse sistema – utilizado para representar ou substituir palavras – permeia a escrita de textos manuscritos em quantidade suficiente para impossibilitar, tornar incompleto ou mesmo produzir erros no processo de recuperação das informações neles contidas. Sendo os textos manuscritos uma das principais fontes de informação para os estudos sócio-histórico-culturais e compreendendo que é quase impossível dissociar textos manuscritos e abreviaturas, conhecer os sistemas abreviativos – características, processos de construção, dificuldades que envolvem o seu desdobramento – constituem uma etapa fundamental para uma boa leitura paleográfica. Por isso a compreensão desse sistema contribui para resgatar e preservar a memória nacional guardada em documentos históricos, que gradativamente vêm sendo destruídos e por esse motivo têm despertado o interesse de pesquisadores para a urgência do resgate dessas informações. Por essa razão, essa pesquisa destina-se ao estudo das abreviaturas, especificamente aquelas que estão presentes em documentos notariais dos séculos XVIII e XIX, retiradas de textos editados em teses, dissertações e monografias defendidas na Universidade Federal da Bahia. Compõe este trabalho um glossário que está subdividido em duas partes. A primeira traz as imagens digitalizas de 711 abreviaturas, as quais são testemunhas das dificuldades relacionadas à compreensão das abreviaturas, como também ratificam a importância do seu conhecimento em virtude das características próprias da escrita da época, das particularidades de cada amanuense bem como das especificidades do sistema abreviativo. A segunda traz 175 abreviaturas cujas imagens não foram possíveis de captação em virtude do precário estado do suporte. Dessa forma, este trabalho visa contribuir para encurtar a distância entre a simplificação da escrita gerada pelas abreviaturas nesses séculos e a complexidade para decifrá-las hoje.

The abbreviation’s study is a very relevant theme, once this system is used either to represent or substitute words. It goes through the writing of handwriting texts in sufficient quantity not to be possible, to become unfinished or to make mistakes into the process of taking back information from it. The handwriting texts are one of the main sources of information for the social, historical and cultural studies and as being almost impossible not to associate the handwriting texts with the abbreviations. To get to know the shortened systems, characteristics, the processes of construction and difficulties which envolve their resolution, it constitutes a fundamental phase for a good paleographical reading. For this, the understanding of this system, contributes to rescue and preserve the national thoughts which are kept in historical documents that have been destroyed gradually and because of it, researchers have been interested in the urgency of rescuing the information. For this reason, this research is to study the abbreviations, specifically those that are present in notorious documents from the century XVIII and XIX, taken from texts published in thesis, dissertation and monograph defended at the Bahia Federal University. This work is composed by a glossary which is subdivided into two parts. The first one has digitized images of 711 abbreviations that are witnesses to the difficulties related to the understanding of the abbreviations and also they ratify their importance due to the characteristics of the writing from the time, the peculiarities from the people who write, as well as the specification of the shortened system. The second part has 175 abbreviations which images were not possible to obtain due to precarious condition of the writing material. This work has the aim to contribute to shorten the distance between the simplification of the writing, generated by the abbreviations in these centuries and the complexity to decipher them these days.
